Business or Personal Account: Which Should You Pick?

Updated

Short answer

Pick a business account if you sell products or services and want contact buttons, ads tools and a commercial sound library. Pick a personal account if you are a creator who wants full music access, trends and creator programmes. You can usually switch later in settings.

What actually changes between the two

Both account types can post, go LIVE and build followers. The differences sit in the tools around your videos: who you are talking to, which sounds you can use and how you reach customers.

A business account is built for brands. It typically adds a business category, contact or website buttons, deeper analytics and access to ad tools, but limits you to sounds cleared for commercial use. A personal account keeps the full music library and is the route into most creator monetisation programmes.

Choose business if you sell something

If your goal is orders, bookings or enquiries, the business account fits better. A bakery, a salon or a clothing reseller benefits more from an email or call button than from a trending song.

The commercial sound library protects you too. Using popular songs in a brand video can lead to muted audio or copyright claims, so the restricted library is a feature, not just a limit.

Choose personal if you are building an audience

If you plan to earn through creator rewards, LIVE gifts or brand deals as an individual, a personal account is usually the better start. Many creator programmes are only offered to personal accounts, and trends often depend on popular sounds.

You can still work with brands from a personal account. Brand deals are about your audience and your content, not about the account label.

How to switch and what to check first

Account type is changed in Settings and privacy under the account section. Before switching, write down which features you rely on, because some may disappear, and older videos using restricted sounds could lose audio.

Rules and feature lists change, so open the current help centre page for account types before you decide. If unsure, start personal, grow, and switch when selling becomes the main goal.

Frequently asked questions

Can I switch back from business to personal?

In most cases yes, you can switch back in settings. Check the current options in the app first, because some data or features may not carry over.

Does a business account get less reach?

There is no reliable evidence that the label alone reduces reach. Reach depends far more on whether viewers watch, rewatch and interact with your videos.
