What HD does and does not mean
A video cannot contain detail that was never captured. Upscaling a 720p clip to 1080p makes the file larger and the picture no sharper, and some downloaders do exactly that so they can print the letters HD on a button.
Our format list shows what is actually in the source. If a post has no 1080p version, the HD row is absent rather than fake.
Why some videos have no HD version
- The creator filmed or exported at a lower resolution to begin with.
- The upload happened over a weak connection and TikTok accepted a lighter file.
- The post is old; TikTok upload limits have changed over the years.
- The clip was re-posted from elsewhere, so it is already a second-generation copy.
Size against quality
A thirty-second HD clip runs roughly 10 to 14 MB, against 5 to 7 MB at 720p. On a phone screen the difference is modest; on a television or in an editing timeline it is obvious.
If you are saving for an archive or planning to re-edit, take the HD file. If you are sending it through a messaging app that will compress it anyway, 720p costs you nothing.
What cannot be downloaded
- Posts that were never uploaded in 1080p, where no HD file exists to fetch.
- Private and deleted videos.
- Age-restricted videos that require a signed-in account.
Frequently asked questions
Can you make a low-resolution video sharper?
No, and neither can anyone else. Enlarging a small picture invents pixels; it does not recover detail.
Is the HD file re-encoded?
No. It is passed through as it was stored, which is why the quality matches what you see in the app.
Why does the HD option sometimes not appear?
Because that post has no 1080p version. Showing the option anyway would mean handing you a 720p file with an HD label on it.
Does HD include the audio?
Yes. The MP4 carries video and audio together; MP3 is only for when you want the sound alone.
